What is Speech Language Therapy?

Speech Language Therapy is a skilled service provided to help people communicate functionally with those around them. Speech Language Therapy includes:

  • Articulation/phonology therapy - promotes better intelligibility (makes speech clearer)

  • Language therapy - increases language comprehension and expression

  • Fluency therapy - decreases stuttering (the rhythm and rate of speech)

  • Voice therapy - remedies voice issues (volume, pitch, quality)

  • Pragmatic language therapy- addresses conversational and narrative skills, social skills, social routines, and the general use of appropriate communication in social situations.

  • Literacy instruction - increases awareness of phonemes, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics leading to better decoding skills and text comprehension.

At Thrive, we understand that everyone has different communication needs. We are here to help your child speak their first words, learn American Sign Language, use an augmentative and alternative communication device, practice social skills, work on literacy/reading skills, and/or any other communication intervention they need. Our speech language pathologists will make therapy fun and motivational through play, games, and activities that promote functional and spontaneous communication.
